| deep thoughts. (you don't have to read this) |
[Jun. 21st, 2006|12:05 pm] |
all this talk about classes this summer has, in turn made me think more about classes next fall, up until now i have taken most my classes purely for fun.
and let me tell you, i've taken some pretty random classes.
but every since i was little the "plan" was med school - i just always thought thats where i would end up. science was my thing, and that was cool.
but now, i just can't feel it anymore.
its been this way ever since i started college, however, i continue to carry at least one class a semester EVERY SEMESTER since i started. my worst grades are my biology grades and i think that's just an indication of something greater: my progressive disinterest in science.
BOTTOM LINE: the one thing that has been persistently present in my life, the one thing that i was good at, has suddenly become mediocre. its a let down to be sure and just plain confusing. but now i feel an inexorable pull towards art. i love it because i'm actually good at it. but art? really? me?
i have to pick a major really soon... |

| summer! ooh la la! |
[Jun. 14th, 2006|01:54 pm] |
wow - im bored. middle of the day summer blues are killin' me. actually, the anticipation is worse i think. i leave for summer school at oxford in 22 days, but i might pop before then.
chad and aaron came to town last weekend, and we had a great time but all that did was get me more uber excited... so, i guess its just a waiting game now... Mr. T: can ya handle the pressure!? Me: well, i hope so Mr. T. Mr. T: you betta FOOL! Me: eek... please sir - don't hit me. Mr. T: i pity you.
the good thing is - i've got my suzie back now! hopefully she'll help me pass the time. its not like i dont have anything to do though.
i've gotta read all these books before i go, plus get all my travel arrangements finalized and pack for six weeks... whee... |

| the highlights from Spring Break |
[Apr. 16th, 2006|08:28 pm] |
spent Spring Break with my parents - yeah - we went to Savannah GA and Hilton Head and had a cool time
only notable things that happened were watching an art student walk down the street smoking a joint, and two drunk, homeless, dishevelled rednecks - they serenaded me with a beautiful rendition of "what that woman done did to me"
awesome times all the time

its my second to last day at work at the law firm... and I have nothing to do. its a sad state of affairs.
should I feel guilty playing on livejournal? who can say?
Tiffany turned me on to a new band called RATATAT and I can't get enough. I really just want to go sit in my car and crank up the tunes, but I guess I'll just sit and pretend a little longer... |

im just happy ive got home - everything is simpler here.
my good friend sam porter inspired me to post this lyric: None of us knows and that makes it a mystery: If life is a comedy, then why all the tragedy? Three-and-a-half pounds of brain try to figure out, What this world is all about, And is there an eternity? |

| a first... |
[Aug. 2nd, 2005|06:09 pm] |
i felt like i was in the movie office space this morning.
when i walked across the street to get a coke - the cashier actually asked me, "workin hard... or hardly workin?"
ridiculous.
then a lady pulled up at one the gas pumps (which werent even on), pushed all the buttons, looked around at all the heavy machinery and the caution tape, and said "can i buy some gas?"
ridiculous.
i'm really tired of this job.

had a pretty good weekend though. got to party at school on fri. everybody was in town for summer rush. sat was horrible cuz we had to sit around all day and play with the freshmen. it was really sad - and i dont know whose idea it was to make sat dry, but... they suck alot.
did meet this one stoner/marley fan named Ben who i think will fit in well at the Beta Beta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega. i had to leave early though cuz i had to get up this morning at 8 and work all day
just peachy.

| a Colorful Construction Primer |
[Jun. 27th, 2005|04:49 pm] |
contrary to popular belief, construction workers are not so different from you and me. when i was young, it seemed as if buildings grew... like plants... because i never actually saw anyone working on them. but, keep your eyes peeled, they ARE out there.
they may often seem "unclean" and act very aloof - but construction workers are human beings just the same. it is true, however, that in normal conversation they curse six times as much as a suburban/city dweller. their conversations are very focused though. they often center around either how much they hate their jobs and the people they work with (even though they are paid very well and have worked with the same people for years), how much their wives annoy them (even though they all go straight home from work to spend time with their families), or how much they love titties (obviously).
the only thing that definitively separates these men from us is their vocabulary. they have found different words for almost everything they use. here are a few:
stones or rocks or gravels --- gravel (never just gravel) a screw gun --- cordless drill a sharpshooter --- spade shovel a machine --- basically, anything that can do something that you can't EX. a backhoe, a generator, a level, etc. a stick --- any linear measuring device EX. a tape measure, a straight edge, or... an actual measuring stick a bip --- a big hammer
these words are very esoteric to construction workers, but everyone uses them very frequently - making it impossible not to pick them up. actually, i've started saying screw gun a lot...
maybe i'm becoming one...

| | chaka demus and pliers | ] | i have decided to write regularly about the wonderful things that happen to me each and every day on the CSI construction sites - because its just so freakin crazy!!
today i will try to paint you pictures of several characters that i have the pleasure to work with.
first there is the crazy black crackhead who happens to be the concrete boss's right hand man. in my opinion black people talk to much and too loud, but this guy just jabbers. its ridiculous. he combs his hair straight and it sticks out all around his hat in standard crackhead style, and he walks around with this smirk on his face like he knows something you don't. however, the way he talks takes it all. i can only understand about one word out each of his sentences. most of his sentences start with "hey man..." or "you know..." and so thats all i catch. anyways, he definitely said something that sounded suspiciously like "hey man, you know he's dohgin sumfpihm ryge dum hier. (its better if you imagine negro accent)
my personal favorite is a single word he uttered in a hoarse shout however, this was not directed at any particular person and thats what bothers me
it went someting like MMMDURKEER
if you can imagine...
thats all i have time for - the rest will follow |

| | the hum of the C drive | ] | last week i tied re-bar and poured concrete, today i dug up clay and moved gravel.
the friggin' mexicans have it easier than i do!
however, i must say that i get a strange satisfaction out of a hard day's work. for once in my life i am earning what i get... even though first pay check doesn't come for another week...
the one thing that tempers the wonderful work i do is the weekends, and the last one was no exception.
Nash-Vegas always rocks my face off, and it was so great getting to see Suzanne. i miss that girl all the time.
we partied hard with all her buds, and i got to experience hardcore downtown for the first time (btw - crack heads "selling" flowers scare me). her friend Tad played a show on sat and he rocked pretty dang hard, keep an eye out fans.
we also went to see madagascar - which is a must see. we saw it in the old franklin theatre which only has two theatres and the seats are all chairs clustered around tables. sort of like... lounge... club... theatre... thing. very awesome. and they serve drinks.
franklin is the coolest place ever

| | the who | ] | its 9:30 and i'm still awake... strange indeed - since ive been working im usually out cold at 10. this is my second week, and its as hard as i thought it would be. today we graded and prepped a spot where we laid concrete forms and reinforcing steel so that they can pour the 'crete manana.
it was crazy hot today for the first time this year, and i got sunburned reeely bad. (oooh yeaaa... i HATE alabama)
however, im taking off work and going to see suzie this weekend. she got tickets to the nashville music festival on friday and saturday, then were going to their celtic festival on sunday. im gonna wear my kilt and im really excited!
im really looking forward to a good weekend. (cant wait to see my girl)
not that i didnt have a good weekend last week. i had seen hardly anyone since school got out so i had a nice little party and everyone came to see me. smooth ya? i had to get up hella early the next day and clean up though, cuz i had to go to montgomery.
...and now im "THE GODFATHER"
seriously, i presented Hugh Claire Nickson IV at his christening. i really enjoyed getting to see all the nicksons. we got to stop by the lake for a day too which was just icing on the top.
